I have no life…

There, I said it, I have no life.

I don’t know why but even though I am quite open to new technologies, when they’re useful that is, I feel that the web is turning into a very strange hurly whirly of virtual “I need to be online all the time with everyone I know and let them know what I do every seconds of my life” thingy, stuff etc..

Now I find that very intrusive and pardon if I might be “Gay” (I am not, but my son use this all the time) but I cannot begin to understand the buzz (and I’ll come to this later) behind this.

I must be getting too old for this stuff (I am 44)

Back in the days, about 15 years ago, the Web was great, things were simple; you didn’t get (much) spam, most things were free and the information was more or less useful.

Today the web is turning into an ugly beast, [much too] full of useless stuff drowning the useful stuff. The useful stuff is usually no longer free though, this can be a good thing, but it tends to become a little silly most times.

In 1996 I watched a TV program about the web, and there was an interview of an artist from around L.A. I think, and he said (roughly):

“The creativity that is allowed to be broadcast to the world via the web will soon be locked down and that will be the death of the Web; the commercial world will take over and that will be it! Snap! All will no longer be free, that will be it, the web will be dead, and the good times will be gone forever”

This, I think, happened more than 5 years ago.

Today the web can be and still is very useful, but it’s getting harder to sort the weed from the chaff.

I have problems with this and I am a veteran, so imagine what it does to people who’ve never been on the web until today, like 3-4-5 years old kids or even people in their 60-70’s who can barely understand a Computer to start with, and could potentially find themselves in front of a page that says “Your computer is infected”* on their first hour of web browsing.

What kind of message is that giving out? The web is crap… and don’t trust it, but then it’s usually too late, I am afraid to say, the poor sod is reduced to pay criminals.

That frightens/worries me slightly.

I do have kids, 3 boys and they are, fortunately, in their teens now and quite frankly very nice chaps; they were given unrestricted and, god forbid, unsupervised access to the Web since they were about that age. But I am glad it was 10 years ago! Now I would not be so sure. All they were interested about was, and still is, gaming.

To come back to the Buzz, about all this, and the reason that prompted me to write this, is the arrival of Google “Buzz” in my Gmail, which I promptly hid.

You see a couple of months ago, I signed up to Facebook and other Plaxo “social websites”, the latter to reconnect with long lost friend in my country of origin (Switzerland) and the former just to see what all the fuss was about.

Plaxo was useful to initiate contact, and Facebook, Well, I stuck a couple of photos on, talked about my hobby (Motor biking) and lost interest pretty much after 3 weeks, I since disabled it. I find it an utter waste of time and, as I previously said, having no life does not help, sorry, my wife uses it for business and she’s got more of a life than me.

I also opened a Twitter account, this also has been falling in the way side, after the only thing I was writing on it is “Typing this on this site” (Well it asks you what you’re doing RIGHT NOW isn’t it?). It became quite boring after a short while, so apart from posting some links explaining what I think of Twitter/Facebook/Bebo etc. I don’t bother.

Maybe one day when I have a life and more friends I will use these again, but at present I don’t find them at all interesting, but that’s just me.

I have no life, remember?

What I do find still a little useful are Discussion Forums, so I guess I am finding myself being part of a forgotten generation that died many, many Web Moons ago.

I don’t know if it’s just me that believe all this? Surely not! There must be people that have better things to do out there than Tweeting and Book their face? Maybe it’s a fad?

Yes, it’s a fad.

It’s got to be…

On to the next thing, I might start “Blogging” more, something I really never though much about… You never know.

Boot note:

Please Google don’t mess up the Web, it’s still a great place to be on.

Will it still be in 10 years time? I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Maybe I’ll get that lost life back as well.

* You know the bogus website tricking you to think you’re really infected, when you’re not… This is actually quite comical when I discover that my Linux machine has got 100’s of infected “dll” and “exe” files! (I have been using Linux as my OS of choice since 2003)

All websites moved

All the websites and email accounts have now been moved. There was a little hicup as the pleskbackup (8.6) did not like me, so I had to backup and restore each websites manually.

There was also a problem with the/usr/ partition overfilling and crashed the Plesk CP by filling up /usr/local/psa/PMM/logs, I had to move some restore logs as they were huge (3.4GB). After that, panic over and all went ok. (I took the safety option not to delete the files as you never know what Plesk can throw up at you, but it did not seem to affect my work, so I don’t know what these files are for except after action review? yes I fancy looking at a 3.4GB log file!)

Plesk does seem to have some issues regarding disk space…

Anyway, the site are all moved and all is working well again. The DNS will be propagated by tonight, as I can already ping the new IP…

The Urchin stats will be replaced by Google Analytics, it seems quite good.

Strange behaviour with Imagemagick’s convert file permission

For some weird reason I haven’t been able to find out why or how to change this, the image conversion on the new server, using Imagemagick’s “convert” command failed to set the right permissions to the output files, I spent a long time searching for some resources on the web about how to change the converted file permission of a converted image by Imagemagick’s convert command but all I got was more or less info about permission preventing the file to be converted.

So at the end I decided to see if inserting a simple system command that chmod the files after conversion would work.

It did.

So the problem is fixed, but I still don’t know why the permission aren’t right to start with, so if anyone’s got an answer feel free to share.

The US server is being phased out…

This weekend (Feb 6-7th) all websites are being moved to the UK server, the US server will be phased out…

The only big loss is the end of the Urchin Stats as theplanet was offering $0 license for this application, however I don’t think it will be felt too badly…

The job is :

  1. change all DNS records to point all the domain from the old NS (ev1servers) to the new NSes (mydomain)
  2. Backup all the websites using pleskbackup and a list of, see this PDF for information
  3. Backup the Urchin stats (you never know)
  4. copy the backup over to the UK server
  5. Restore the backup
  6. Modify the DNS records for all domains.
  7. Cancel the US server (this will be done on Tue after all is moved and working OK)

deltacopy service won’t start

Question: The DeltaCopy service won’t start due to login failure. What can I do?
Answer: Symptoms You get the following message when trying to start the service.

Could not start the service. The service could not be logged on. Check user id and password specified for login.

DeltaCopy Server Service is a regular service on Windows OS, which requires a Windows user id/password to run on the machine. Follow the steps below to configure this.

* Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
* Locate the service for DeltaCopy
* Click the right-mouse button and select Properties
* Click on the “Log On” tab
* Specify an Account and its password. DO NOT use the “System Account”. We recommend you use “Administrator”

New Classifieds System

The current Classifieds used on the Scothorse is now 8 years old, apart from a few modifications and debugging, it has remained unchanged since around 2001.

A new program which eliminates the current slow, un-potimised and not very modular architecture must be re-designed. Given that the program is old and bloated, the only viable solution is to design it from scratch, as it was written when I was still getting familliar with Perl and you don’t want to see the code!

The current classifieds was born as a system using a “flat” database (a file) and got subsequently moved into a MySQL database, this led to die hard bad habits which do not work in a Database environment.

During the next few months, I hope to be able to create that new program and, if I have time, I will try to comment as much as possible about the project on this Blog.

I will obviously not reveal the complete code (but I may) but I need to keep an history of how it started, bloggin’ is good for that. 😛

As per the current line of thinking the program shall use:

  • Perl as the main application management layer
  • MySQl as the database layer
  • XML
  • XSL
  • AJAX

Ajax is interesting, however it seems that it is just some Javascript calling server snippets without having to reload the whole page. I quite like that, saves bandwitdh (although I currently have enough reserve (100G/mo used in a 1T allowance, room for growth)

Aim

Enable the system to use Web 2.0 Features fully.

Am I nuts?

Why would I want to write a program that is very likely to available on the web for a few quids (or bucks for our US friends) like this one? Well, I need to get to grip with XML as I have big plans and this could make us quite confortable for a good few years. I know some will say, you don’t have time! I know, that is even more why I want to do it. I need to be busy and long projects like that are perfect.

I give myself 6 to 8 months to get this done, making it ready for Spring 2010, history will tell if I managed to achieve it. (I didn’t do 100% yet as of Dec 2011)

Now I am gooing to think about the architecture with a mindmap…

Website Migration

Most websites were transfered from he US server to the UK server by August 18. Only emails needing SPAM filtering and all the highest trafficked websites remain on the US server, Urchin Stats are also managed by the US server, the only glitch has been the transfer of a Invision Powerboard over to the new server which does not support this configuration (it is a optional extra I do not need as they are on the US server as standard…)

The other problem today is that mydomain.com messed up the DNS pointers for all co.uk domains!

this is not good at all!!

Server Migration – Update

Progress is being made into the transition from the USA server to the UK server for the Websites. The Urchin stats log files had to be moved to a ftp readable directory as the current “statistics” folder did not allow ftp access. Daily Synchronisation of the US server backups are also made to the UK server using cron. In addition, mysql databases are also successfully transfered from one server to the other without loss of info by rsyncing /usr/var/mysql/* (bar some precious folders and files). This is very promising.

I expect the websites to be moving to the new server within a fortnight… Once all the websites are transfered. the backup will be made in the opposite direction to maintain integrity. An announcement will be made later on this week to advise website owners not to change their website’s content.

Some more tests need to be made for feedback forms sending emails to the local machine as it might be a potential problem once the UK server is serving/scripting pages.

Server Migration – Update

Currently no progress has been made towards streamlining the dedicated servers operation. Test have been made and all is likely to work on the UK server, however limitations in the software licensing does not allow Spam filtering on the UK server. Also Urchin Stats are only allowed on the US server, given for free by the Data Center Support.

So the plan is currently to host the websites on the UK server as this is primordial for speedy delivery on mainly UK/EU customers and Email service will be on the USA server.

Mirroring of the Websites will be made onto the US server in case of problem on the UK server. Allowing me to switch DNS within hours if necessary…

As for email. A full US server backup will be made and copied both locally and remotely (UK) to prevent loss of email data.

In addition a full UK server backup will also be made weekly on a backup server allocated with the UK server which is in a 3rd location, making the whole system totally redundant and (hopefully) free from data loss risk due to act of gods of any kind.

Having email and websites separated has also got the benefit of reducing the load of the server by half on both machines, this is also going to make website content delivery much quicker…

I believe that it is the best option available at the present time.
